World Cup 2026 format explained: groups, round of 32 and beyond
The 2026 World Cup uses a brand-new format built around its 48 teams. Here’s how it works, stage by stage.
The structure at a glance
| Stage | Teams | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Group stage | 48 | 12 groups of 4 |
| Round of 32 | 32 | Top 2 per group + 8 best 3rd-placed |
| Round of 16 | 16 | Single-elimination |
| Quarter-finals | 8 | Single-elimination |
| Semi-finals | 4 | Single-elimination |
| Final | 2 | One match decides the title |
Group stage: 12 groups of four
The 48 teams are drawn into 12 groups of four. Every team plays the other three in its group once. That’s the same familiar group format — just more groups than ever.
Who advances
This is the new part:
- Top two in each group advance automatically — that’s 24 teams.
- The eight best third-placed teams across all groups also go through.
- Together that fills a round of 32.
Because third place can be enough, the final round of group games gets tense in a new way — teams calculating exactly what result keeps them alive.
The knockout path
From the round of 32 it’s straight single-elimination: round of 32 → round of 16 → quarter-finals → semi-finals → final. One bad night and you’re out — which is why knockouts are so high-variance (see why upsets happen).
